Sexual Liberation Was An Unparalleled Disaster

The idea behind the Left is that something is holding us back and manipulating us, which only makes sense if you realize that the human ego thinks that it is God, and anything that interferes with this — like reality — is a weird voodoo science that is evil. The Left gives this solipsism a voice by declaring victimhood and scapegoating those who succeed for being more in touch with reality.

Accordingly, we are forever in these Leftist times seeking “liberation” from one or another reality-based forces whose effects are separated from their causes by substantial lengths of time. The snake oil salesman makes his money in the interval between the sale and the discovery that the snake oil is useless, during which time his wagon has moved on in the night. So it is also with egalitarian policies.

One of these, sexual liberation, meant the detachment of sex from marriage, family and reproduction. In theory, this sounds like a great weight off of our shoulders; we can enjoy sex whenever, however! In reality, as with most things, what gives meaning to our choices is what we sacrifice, and what we achieve for that sacrifice, a calculus that puts family ahead of casual sex.

And what has sexual liberation wrought? A look into the life of Hugh Hefner shows us that the record is bad:

Hefner touted his pornographic magazine as “breaking barriers,” which cannot be denied. In the decades since the first issue, America has discarded the norm of monogamous marriage as a lifetime commitment oriented toward family formation. Among the victims of this baneful change to which Hefner dedicated his life are the nation’s 13 million single mothers and 20 million fatherless children, representing a tenfold increase in out-of-wedlock births between Playboy’s launch and its progenitor’s death.

…The pornographer’s legacy fittingly includes the 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, where he helped fund challenges to laws curbing abortion, since which 59 million babies have been aborted.

Look at that carnage. It seems that sexual liberation, instead of liberating us, enslaved us to a dying future. How can this be? Deconstruction separates necessary parts of a cause/effect equation so that we can look at isolated objects in time and conclude that they have characteristics based on that moment, when their characteristics only emerge when interacting with other objects over time.

For humans, the challenge remains to defeat our internal solipsism which has us blaming the world for our own cognitive problems, and therefore, unwilling to alter ourselves. Sexual liberation says that instead of doing the hard work of setting up a family, we should enjoy sex in the present, and ignore the emptiness of that as a long-term plan. Not surprisingly, it ends in tears.
