Brazil had a choice. They could overthink their election and succumb to fear or they could just make that gut call and get it right. They went with the gut and intuition. They got it dead-on right. Sanity 1 – Democracy 0. The (((Gnu Yawk Times))) tells us all we to know about how well things went down South.
Brazil on Sunday became the latest country to drift toward the far right, electing a strident populist as president in the nation’s most radical political change since democracy was restored more than 30 years ago. The president-elect, Jair Bolsonaro, has exalted the country’s military dictatorship, advocated torture and threatened to destroy, jail or drive into exile his political opponents. He won by tapping into a deep well of resentment at the status quo in Brazil — a country whiplashed by rising crime and two years of political and economic turmoil — and by presenting himself as the alternative.
Like the perfect contrarian indicator, the (((Gnu Yawk Times))) tells us all we need to know once we flip their premise onto its head. These countries don’t “drift toward the far right”. They get shoved. They get shoved by the Dark Enlightenment that falls like yellow rain upon all those who foolishly believe that an electoral system ends conflict and pacifies a diverse society. They get shoved when they get promised a bonanza and find out the politicians are just using these fake promises to steal from them. If you really could keep your Doctor and your policy under ObamaCare, who here believes Trump would have stood a prayer of winning in 2016?
So Bolsonaro supposedly “has exalted the country’s military dictatorship, advocated torture and threatened to destroy, jail or drive into exile his political opponents.” What do you think happened under FDR in WW2? Japanese Americans were jailed en masse the first time Empire felt the need. Or how about during the Depression. One of General MacArthur’s first combat engagements involved The Bonus Army. Ruby Ridge, The Branch Davidian Compound, The Pine Ridge Reservation conflict involving AIM, and heck, Reconstruction and The Trail of Tears are all examples of a certain “exceptional” democracy doing exactly these things to their opposition. Try telling anyone at the 1873 New Orleans Mardi Gras Parade that General “Silver Spoons” Butler was sent to play the Love Rock.
All democracies do all the things Bolsanaro has been pre-emptively accused of. The USSA did them in spades. We just sanctimoniously claim it’s “different” when FDR, Lincoln or Dubya did them. Amerikan Exceptionalism apparently exempts us from the same code of honor our Leftist News Media tries to inflict upon other people.
And I just love the line about the “deep well of resentment at the status quo in Brazil — a country whiplashed by rising crime and two years of political and economic turmoil.” Where does the deep well of resentment come from? Just a few loose crooks and two years of bad GDP numbers? What a joke! Brazil sucks and the less sucky part would like to divorce the alcoholic bums that fill its grimy, crime-infested favelas. All that Lava Jato did was force what anyone with the IQ of a Marmoset already knew into the newspapers.
Duterte won in The Philipines pulling up bucket upon bucket of votes from the very same well. He might has well have been running against the very same collection of thieves, churls and duplicitous waghalters. Failed people don’t magically start hitting 1.000 because they get to a Democracy and connect with the “Modern World.” It doesn’t work in Bulletmore, Murdaland either.
Just as Amerikan Exceptionalism is a stupid, dishonest joke, there is also no such thing as Filipino or Brazilian exceptionalism. Put losers in Rio De Janeiro and Manila and you get stupid people, playing stupid games and predictably winning really stupid prizes. Voters in the rest of Brazil finally awakened to the shame and stopped seeing its perpetrators as socio-economic victims. You don’t make ticks and mosquitoes play nicely by feeding them more blood. You just get way more of the insects and all the filth and the disease that these pests bring. The electorate in Brazil just reached for a big-ass can of bug spray. Sanity 1 – Democracy 0.
