  Some say that if Vietnam did so and won, “this outcome would be severe blow to China’s prestige and international standing.” That may be so, but the legal obstacles and political blowback from China could be far more costly to Vietnam than to China.

  The Chinese economy shows the early signs of systemic collapse. This means that China will go to war and, per the wont of Asiatic tyrants, will seek to capture buffer zones around the motherland. Vietnam, the South China Sea, Korea, India, and Afghanistan are within these proposed zones. China knows that it can seize this territory and then fight a defensive war from it, as Russia did in Crimea, which will keep democracy at bay because voters and politicians fear casualties; the only good war in democracy is one where we sweep in against an incompetent and under-equipped foe, bomb them into the pavement, and lose more guys from accidents than enemy fire. A defensive war is much easier to fight and China will not be dislodged from these territories, but will also be unable to rule them at the same time that they will not fix its economic woes. Ideally, it hopes to lure the USA into war so that it can mobilize its entire society to fight and end up victorious; if the USA has any brains (the voters do not) it will stay out of this conflict and let China collapse on its own.
