Slowly, painfully, Late Stage Democracy winds down into paradox and dysfunction.

We told them it would not work, but the human mind seeks solipsism in inverse proportion to how intelligent it is, and intelligence is rare. We needed an intelligence hierarchy like we had with the aristocracy, but our Bohemians and Enlightened intellectuals thought that was a bad thing.

Now we pay the price. If we are lucky, some of us will remain after the third worlding of the first world, and they will slaughter the others and leave behind a society of the real remnant: the Cro-Magnids who have souls, instead of all those grey NPCs in their mixed-race, cultureless, soulless, and stimulus-dependent delirium.

Sometimes the best mercy is destroying everything but that which is highly functional.
