It turns out that assimilation is nonsense:

The 33-year-old cop, Baimadajie Angwang, who was born in the region of Tibet in China, allegedly reported to officials at the Chinese consulate in New York on the activities of other Tibetans in the New York area.

People have allegiance to whatever gives them identity, which in a diverse society, means whatever is most different from the rest. In this case, we see that fantasies of assimilation and integration clash with the need for an identity, a culture, and a sense of purpose.
